TRAVEL JAPAN — Toyoko Inn Shijo Omiya — Part III

Let me show you my cute room in Kyoto. My goal was to spend little on the room in Kyoto and save my budget for the ryokans, ( Japanese style inns).

My tour company told me if I stayed in less than a three star hotel in Japan I would be subjected to cigarette smoke. (A migraine and puking would be my response.)

The Japanese value the purifying quality of smoke, water and alcohol. To them, smoking cigarettes is a good thing. I suspect this attitude of theirs is part of the low rate of cigarette related cancers.

This room was lovely, impeccably clean and very comfortable. The front desk had English speaking people and I was very pleased. I never smelt a whiff of cigarette smoke.

There are some very clever things the Japanese have come up with in their hotel rooms.

There is always access to hot water –

This room has a pants presser –

A fancy Japanese toilet

A tub that is shorter than ours, but deeper and you can soak up to your chin –

The faucet on the sink swings over the tub or you can use the hand held shower.

My favorite innovation is that the tub sits on a tray with a drain in it. If the tub overflows no problem. I suspect they hose down the whole room and it all drains away.

I love impeccably clean. In Japanese the same word means clean and beauty.

Do I know the word? Ah no, Jen, do you know?

They provide a fresh cotton robe each day –

And fresh slippers each day, traditionally worn in the bathroom –

Amenities –

And a face mask –

FEEL GOOD FRIDAY

This week I was sick and I let go of most things and hung out in bed a lot.  I looove to do this.

It makes me think I could schedule in a day sometimes to do that and then maybe my body wouldn’t have to get sick to get me to do it.

I started to schedule in a day off and that feels like pressure. hmm.

Do you all think you get sick sometimes because your body needs a rest?

I wonder what the early warning signs are?

If I knew, I would say loss of my sense of humor and thinking that I have to accomplish in order to feel worthwhile.

I feel excellent right now. Maybe I’ll go play.

XD

FEEL GOOD FRIDAY

It’s official. I validated my wordcount and I completed Nanowrimo for the 5th time.

It’s a great impetus to get a first draft done. For me, I get to discover a story inside me. Now I will cut about 3/4 of it and get to work revising it or one of my other drafts, AFTER Christmas.

*

We had two of our neighbors over for Thanksgiving dinner. It was lovely as usual.

*

When I was 15 my mother had my youngest brother and was coming home from the hospital on Thanksgiving. I said I would cook Thanksgiving dinner for 11 of us. How hard could it be? I knew how to cook.

Muhahahhaha.

Thank goodness my father helped me. And I was never unrealistic about hosting a dinner party again. I do what I can to keep things simple.

*

When my grandchildren come to visit at Christmas, I want as much done ahead of time as possible so I can put all my energy into enjoying them.

So when I cooked this turkey, I stuffed it and cooked some additional stuffing in a pan. I blended the two batches of stuffing together and froze half of it. At Christmas I will roast an unstuffed bird which is so much easier. I also made 4 cups of gravy and will freeze half of that for Christmas too. And I made 4 pie crusts and froze 2 of them.

*

I stayed in a cotton yukata, (robe) yesterday on black Friday, all day. It was great. I guess on Sunday I will venture into traffic. I hope it will be less by than.

*

Have your best holidays ever.

XD

Travel Japan – A Question Of Beauty?

In my November 3rd post, I wrote regarding my previous trips to Japan:

If this trip is like my others, I become heightened aesthetically. I can hardly walk down the street without exclaiming at the beauty in the most ordinary of objects – a leaf, a crack in the sidewalk.

Jb at Out Of My Mind And Onto The Page commented:

Why do you think that happens? Is there a big contrast from where you live? Or is it because you’re relaxed and can soak it all up?

It’s not a big contrast from where I live in Hawaii. I am surrounded by natural beauty.
I definitely get relaxed in Japan. That probably is a big factor.
I love design. The Japanese have excellent design judgment.
Look what they did with an ordinary napkin.

A packaged cold lunch:

I think the Japanese work with nature that they love so much and enhance it, like at Adachi Museum gardens:

By kate nev

I think, it’s like if you walk into an ordinary room vs. walking into a room that has been designed to draw your eye to the best features.

I came to these gardens one day when I was out of sorts and noticed I became tranquil by the time I left.

It makes me want to create more beauty or rather enhance what is there. I guess that means clean up my clutter, XD

This is my favorite thing about Japan, the effect it has on me.

Enjoy the beauty in your life today. XD

FEEL GOOD FRIDAY

I am feeling so good about the fact that When I became so absorbed in a book I have been reading: I had the opportunity to drop everything and just read yesterday.

I finished the book, except the epilogue. It was so good, I didn’t want to stop reading. I laid outside on a lounge chair and read. Life doesn’t get much better.

The book is THE HELP.

The book is about the lives of black housekeepers in the south in the 60’s. It is an exquisite balance of the ugly and the beautiful. I liked it even though the author sidesteps sexual abuse.
